2013 Crew

David "Jiles" Stiles - Crew Chief

Picture
Jiles is the energetic force of the team.  Likened to a pressure cooker set to broil, his enthusiasm and can-do attitude are a must for any successful RAAM attempt, as are his impromptu dance offs.  Based in California, Jiles is set to oversee the American side of things, and is tasked at prepping the support vehicles, keeping us on course, and keeping up with Hammer’s incessant questioning of upcoming climbs, grades, descents and time gaps.

Along with Pete, Jiles is the founder / owner of MyoFlexibility, and as such is co-charged with the responsibility of keeping the Hammer musculoskeletaly in check, or as much in check as possible over 3,000 miles.

"Lessons have been learned, and this year we're going back to basics and keeping it simple, light, and fast.  Two simple rules this year, Flagstaff before midnight, and no more pussyfooting along, ride like a man or change your name to Susan." -Jiles

Brandon "Homie" Strickland

Picture
Brandon appears to be seven years old, his driving skills are getting better and his understanding of the world of cycling is limited if not non-existant. Brandon is fueled primarily by Monster energy drinks and is the only member of the crew shorter than Jiles. Brandon will be tasked with the very important job of not screwing up or suffer the wrath of an angry : Hammer, Jiles or Pete before being placed in a vehicle with The DH. He insists "Homie learns fast" and "Homie plays nice with others" still, most of us feel that he will be placed on a bus home before we hit the Arizona state line.

June "Pete" Lohner

Picture
Pete has a doctorate in physical therapy from Duke University, nuff said?  She is the co-founder / owner of MyoFlexibility, and is charged with keeping the Hammer healthy.  Pete will have the final say in all such matters, including caloric intake, hydration, and injury prevention / maintenance.

June's favorite memory from 2012: "Rumble strip."

Stu "THe DH" Johnson

Picture
Known in some African villages only as "The Smelly One" The Dirty Hippy is the latest edition to Team Hammerfest. His background in eating granola mixed with yogurt will be matched by nobody. A part time ski patroller/mountain bike guide The DH has a background in "that sounds like fun" as well as experience stating famous last words such as "watch this!" and "I should be able to make it." His duct tape and string version of bike maintenance has Orcus worried when it comes to nightly wash downs but his striking resemblance to a certain RAAM record holder far out weighs any negative press Team Hammerfest will receive from The DH breaking the odor laws of six mid western states.

Mike "Pipewrench" Popik

Picture
The Pipewrench is Slovak, and is looking most forward to the party in Annapolis.  He's adventure raced the world over, often with the Hammer, and made the 15hr drive down to help us get through West Virginia last year, took a long shift in the van and then turned around for home.  He's a crafty and trusted strategist, and will bring a valuable sense of when to be patient, and when to panic.

2012 Crew

Dennis "Dennis" Lebert

Picture
This is Dennis.  Dennis deals.  Dennis deals with problems.  Dennis deals with situations.  Dennis deals with people.  And Dennis deals with people who have problems or situations. Dennis oversees all.
A powerful business owner and consultant, Dennis simply gets it done.

Dennis dealt in 2012, dealt with broken vehicles, broken oaths and broken promises. He dealt with such fire and intensity he is still recuperating in an undisclosed location.

Morgan "El Moe" Jennings

Picture
Moe was the youngest member of the crew, she brought youthful charm and good looks into a team filled with old and crusty veterans of life. This year Moe will be a third year ADVL student at Laurentian University, has a love for canoeing, fishing and adventure in general. This year she will not be able to be a part of TeamHammerFest, but will be providing music that "doesn't sound so old school" for Hammer.

Rob "Ed" Edmonstone

Picture
Ed was the logistical wizard of the 2012 team.  Also the bike guru of the team.  Also the president of daily operations, and hence was in charge of the perpetual speed vs. distance equation, and whether or not it was working.

His expertise, cool head and Spongebob Pirate Attack Mode will be missed, but still listen for his voice over the PA as off-site consultant.

Sebastian "Seb" Nault

Picture
Seb is an Outdoor Leadership professor, and is always looking for an adventure.  Naturally he fit right in to the team, and it was an honor to have his support. A fellow Outdoor Adventure Leadership graduate Seb was tasked with data collection for a research project on calorie expenditure.  "I'm thrilled that the (Laurentian) University supported Team HammerFest and pleased the School of Human Kinetics and Adventure Leadership program faculty have been so encouraging and helpful to an Alumnus." -Seb
