The night ride from Brawley to Parker was very quick but a little lght on the Kcal as he only averaged 142 Kcal per hour...upon arrival to the TS he said "why why to they ride so fast? its 3000 miles for petes sake!"
We had a rough spell in the morning with a near dropping down the drain he was circling. When faced with a premature IV or downing 400 kcal of drink box and a bottle of gatorrade the later was his choice and off we went. By 11AM it was 106 in the high desert. We again used the ice cold towel arm sleeves and the ice cold towel hat...if fact they are still on him as we speak. We brought out all our goodies: cold packs, ice cold towels, ice water bottle dumpped everywhere on him, regular towel soaked in the cooler with ice stuck to it and pump up handle bar mount misting device...When him arrived at Congress it took all of 8 seconds for him to decided he could be a "whimp" and sit in the cold pool the awesome volenteers at Congress set up....After the pool, a bag of Tuna, a drink box, a waterbottel and a full clothing chage I saw a totally different hammer before me.
The rest of the day was full of some of the hardest climbing west of the atlantic and it pretty much kicked the snot out of an otherwise happy Hammer. HE was good about eating and June pumped an average of 500 kcal an hour so we like that!
Jason told me that at no time did he ever push harder than a "La dee friken da" pace...This is good. He is becoming wise in his old age and pacing himself...I know I know he is the hammer and thats just not right but whatcha gonna do?
Overall he is in 8th place on the road in the SOlo division and if he keeps this pace he will finish in 8 days 22 hours...factor in sleep and fatigue i think we can make a sub 10 day crossing. The winds are not good for a record year but strasser is racing very smart and if the weather chages we may see a blast from the mosnter.
Now, I will say this. Everytime Jason gets a little bonky early he hits the gas like a son of a gun soon their after.
Well I am working on 1 hours of sleep in 38 so I'm gonna sack out for the ride to flagstaff KOA and the BBQ of a lifetime.
Keep it coming folks we love to hear it.
